11th-Gen Honda Civic Prototype Previewed; India Bound in 2022!

Honda has previewed the new 11th-gen Civic in prototype form and it’s a huge departure from the current-gen model, both inside and outside. It is however only expected to arrive in India by 2022.

After teasing us with the 11th-gen Civic a few days ago, Honda has now revealed the new Civic in prototype form yesterday. The new Honda Civic is a huge departure from the current 10th-gen Civic that we have here in India, both in terms of exterior and interior styling. Although Honda is calling this a prototype at this stage, the final production-spec model will be largely similar to this prototype, save some few changes here and there. It also has much more features and safety tech than before, so let’s take a closer look at what’s to come.

The Honda Civic is one of the oldest names in the automotive world, being in existence since 1973. This new Honda Civic is a huge departure from the radical styling of the current-gen model and more a tribute to the Civics of the yester years. You either liked or you hated the styling of the current-gen Civic. With this new generation model, Honda has clearly opted for a much safer approach with the styling being influenced a lot by the new City and even the Accord. The aggressive and edgy design has given way to a much more grown-up and mature design language.

The grille is now narrower with less angular headlights. The huge air dam in the lower bumper however looks awkwardly proportioned. The new Civic gets strong character lines along its profile. The C-shaped tail lamps at the rear have been ditched for horizontal LED tail lights, which look like they belong to a Skoda car. There’s even a subtle boot lid spoiler on the new Civic and that should really up its sporty appeal. The newly designed gunmetal finished alloy wheels look stunning and there are even ‘Honda Design’ motifs around the car, a particularly cool touch. Although this is still the prototype, expect most of the car to remain unchanged in production-spec.

On the inside too, the new Civic has been completely revised. You can see influences from the Honda e EV and even the new-gen City in the design and layout of the new dashboard. The interiors seem a lot less uncluttered and more sophisticated and minimalistic than before. The touchscreen is now a floating 9-inch unit and there’s a fully digital instrument cluster as well now. Although Honda hasn’t shared the exact details about the new safety suite on the Civic,  it does promise multiple new active and passive safety features. The safety suite of Honda Sensing and multiple airbags will also be available.

Expect the new-gen model to make its market debut sometime in early-2021 but it will come to India sometime only in 2022.

Honda hasn’t specifically said about what could be under the hood of the new Civic but it will be powered by Honda’s VTEC Turbo range of petrol engines. And yes, a hybrid variant too could be added to the lineup. Currently, the India-spec Honda Civic is powered by a 1.8L 141PS/174Nm petrol engine and a 1.6L 120PS/300Nm diesel engine. In India, the Civic is currently priced from Rs. 17.93 lakh to Rs 22.34 lakh (ex-showroom). Expect the new-gen model to make its market debut sometime in early-2021 but it will come to India sometime only in 2022.
