Clash of the Segments– Nissan Magnite vs Maruti Suzuki Baleno

In this edition of clash of segments, we are comparing the all-new Nissan Magnite with one of the most popular premium hatchbacks in India, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The reason is the huge overlap in the prices of the two. While the Nissan Magnite starts at Rs 4,99,000 lacs, the Baleno starts at Rs 5,64,000. The range-topping variant of Magnite will set you back by Rs 9,35,000 and top-spec Baleno costs Rs 8,97,000. With such a similar price point, it can get a bit difficult to choose one. That’s why we are here to help! Before you move forward, here is another comparison which we did recently on Nissan Magnite VS Volkswagen Polo, check this out.

Nissan Magnite is powered by 3-Cylinder 1L Petrol and a bit more powerful Turbo-Petrol Engines making 71 bhp/96 Nm and 99 bhp/160 Nm respectively. Now, Magnite having a Kerb weight of a mere 1039 kg is able to draw a lot of performance from these engines. Although the steering is a bit inert, the turbo-powered engine is decent enough to put you back in your seat once the turbo kicks in. Magnite offers a decent ride and handling experience, especially around the corners. The stiff suspension translates to high-speed stability.

Nissan Magnite Maruti Suzuki baleno Comparison

The Maruti Suzuki (NEXA) Baleno is powered by a 1.2L VVT Petrol engine churning out a healthy 82 bhp and 113 Nm with the option of a 5-speed manual or CVT automatic. It also has a slightly powerful 1.2L Dualjet Dual VVT Petrol Hybrid making 88 bhp and identical torque mated to a 5-speed manual. Being very light on its feet at just 865 – 935 kg depending on the transmission, it does deliver good performance and driveability. The combination of light steering and light clutch makes it easier to take around the city.

Nissan Magnite vs Maruti Suzuki Baleno – Fuel Economy

Manual Automatic
Nissan Magnite (Turbo) 18.75 (20) 17.70
Maruti Suzuki Baleno (Hybrid) 21.01 (23.87) 19.56

Magnite gives a rather impressive 20 kmpl with its 1L Turbo-Petrol and a healthy 18.75 kmpl with the naturally aspirated engine. The figure falls slightly at 17.70 kmpl with CVT Automatic. This is a decent mileage considering the size of the sub-4m SUV. But when it comes to fuel efficiency, no one comes closer to Maruti Suzuki products. Baleno will take you 21.01 km in a litre with manual transmission and as astounding 23.87 kms in a litre in the petrol-hybrid guise. Even the CVT automatic transmission is fuel-efficient with a figure of 19.56 kmpl. There are no two ways about this one. If fuel economy is what concerns you the most, you should go for the Baleno.

The Nissan Magnite and Maruti Suzuki Baleno are almost of similar length. Naturally, the Magnite is a bit taller and wider, being a sub-compact SUV. Incidentally, it is the Baleno that has a longer wheelbase. This does translate to a spacious cabin and rear-seat comfort. The boot capacity of both cars is also almost similar. As far as the dimensions go, there isn’t much to pick from here. The wide-stanced bold sub-compact SUV has an edge if someone is looking for a road presence and a higher seating position.

Nissan officially calls Magnite: Bold and beautiful and that is precisely what Magnite’s exteriors are. You just can’t miss the large chrome grille at the front, along with the sleek and stylish First-in-segment Bi-Projector LED Headlamps with LED turn indicators. The L-shaped LED DRLs with LED fog lamps also accentuate the edges of the bumper. The aggressive wheel arches and a 205 mm ground clearance gives it a rather sporty stance. The side profile really stands out, thanks to a chrome beltline running around the windows as well as a quarter-glass at the rear to provide a sense of roominess in the cabin. The wide-split tail lamps make it look wider than it actually is. All-in-all, bold design choice is what Nissan has gone for here and we are not complaining. It certainly looks sporty and bold, especially with those silver skid plates.

The Baleno also has this cluster at the front containing the LED Projector Headlamps with LED DRLs. It has LED tail lamps as well. The front grille with 3D graphic design makes the front nice to look at. The rear looks rather flashy with a chrome bar between the tail lamps. One can certainly say that it is a good looking premium hatchback.

The feature list on the Maruti Suzuki Baleno is as comprehensive as it gets. The Digital Display gives out valuable information like fuel-consumption, distance-to-empty, trip information, gear change indicator and much more. Safety features include ABS with EBD, Dual front airbags, Rear-view camera with sensors, ISOFIX child seat mounts. However, it does miss out on features like Hill-start Assist, Traction Control and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

Which one to pick?

We understand that choosing between these two cars is not easy and we can already see why. But in our opinion, it really comes down to two factors really. If you are someone who doesn’t like to go to the fuelling station again and again and holds fuel-economy and maintenance costs at the top of your priority list, you must go for Maruti Suzuki Baleno.

Contrastingly, if you are someone who is looking for a car with a road presence, stylish looks and also want relatively better performance and practicality, you must go for Magnite Turbo-Petrol.
